Josh McDowell Energizes Students with Hot, Steamy Substance About Faith in College

The Coffeehouse Chronicles by Josh McDowell and Dave Sterrett Targets the 75 Percent of Christian Students Who Lose Their Faith in College

CHICAGO, IL, November 29, 2010—Best-selling author Josh McDowell, a former agnostic who 50 years ago accepted Christ as Savior at Kellogg College, MI, is keenly aware of the problems young adults have reconciling the traditional faith with a sudden influx of new-found knowledge they receive during the college years. In The Coffeehouse Chronicles, a series of apologetics novellas written with Co-Author Dave Sterrett of I am Second, McDowell tackles hard-hitting issues to guard students from common struggles that await them in college. Moody Publishers will release The Coffeehouse Chronicles, January 1, 2011. (Watch Youtube video)

“It’s an incredible challenge—and, unfortunately, faith loses out more times than not,” said McDowell about the startling 75 percent of students that walk away from their faith in college (Barna).

Sterrett, a twentysomething who teaches as an adjunct professor at Liberty University, added, “Once students leave their parents’ homes and enter college life, they’re faced with a host of new ideas and lifestyles from professors, roommates, friends, and social settings.”

According to a recent study (September 2006) by the Barna Group, the spiritual health of the next generation is in serious trouble. The study found that a majority of today’s young adults had been churched at one point during their teen years, but are now spiritually disengaged (not attending church, reading the Bible, or praying). Only 20% of twentysomethings have maintained a level of spiritual activity consistent with their high school experiences.

Each of the three books in The Coffeehouse Chronicles is set in the modern day and portrays real, believable students whose faith is on the rocks as they engage in genuine dialogue concerning three questions:

  • Is the Bible True... really?

  • Who is Jesus... really?

  • Did the Resurrection Happen... really?

In order to effectively engage their target audience of young adults, McDowell and Sterrett will host The World’s Biggest Coffeehouse on February 2, 2011 at 7 PM CT/

7 PM PT. This event will be a live webinar, broadcast to hundreds of students to jump start a conversation that will hopefully ground them firmly in the timeless biblical truths. College and high school students can register to participate in groups watching on a big screen or on their personal laptops in the privacy of their home or dorm room.

While lounging comfortably and taking occasional sips from their favorite cups of joe, McDowell and Sterrett will host the World’s Biggest Coffee house from a cozy coffee shop in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex, near where the authors’ ministry’s are based. With the help of a mediator, the co-authors will introduce topics from The Coffeehouse

Chronicles to discuss with students watching live onsite, from their respective churches campuses, or homes. These students will also be able to ask questions live and interact via Twitter.
